Our History
The Oxford Ambulance Association (OAA) was established on November 9, 1954, by a dedicated group of community members committed to addressing the Town’s growing need for emergency medical services. This early group—comprised of local farmers, business owners, firefighters, teachers, homemakers, and concerned citizens—came together to create Oxford’s first community-based EMS organization. Their efforts began with a used hearse-style ambulance, generously donated by the neighboring town of Beacon Falls, which was housed in the old Center Firehouse on Route 67.
As the demand for emergency medical care grew, so did OAA. By the early 1970s, a second ambulance was added to accommodate Oxford’s expanding population. Over the next two decades, OAA kept pace with advancements in emergency medicine, incorporating new equipment and improving pre-hospital care standards to better serve the community.
In the early 1990s, recognizing the need for independent operations, OAA formally separated from the Oxford Fire Department. This transition was finalized on July 6, 1994, through a town ordinance revision, allowing OAA to focus exclusively on emergency medical services. As training and equipment costs increased, OAA sought additional support from the Town of Oxford, which responded by providing funding for equipment and vehicles.
Throughout its history, OAA members have demonstrated unwavering dedication, often putting their personal and professional lives on hold to serve their neighbors. Beyond emergency response, OAA has built a thriving EMS Training Center and taken an active role in public safety initiatives, and community health education.
As Oxford continues to grow, so does OAA. In response to increasing call volumes and evolving community needs, the organization now has 3 ambulances and continues to build its fleet. As a pillar of the community for over 65 years, OAA remains steadfast in its mission to provide exceptional emergency medical services, ensuring the safety and well-being of Oxford residents now and into the future.
We are proud of our Decades of Dedication. In 2025, OAA entered a new era of growth and development. …we are very excited for what’s to come!
